Daily Journey Journal #233: lindy hop

One two three and four! Five six seven and eight!

Twenty-five sets of feet step to the counts, the rhythm stealing into our bodies and beginning to take us to that special plane where dancers exist and all else falls away. Heads bob, bodies bounce in time, feet follow the counts we hear.

One two three and four! Five six seven and eight! One two three and four! Five six seven and eight!

The pace speeds up and we follow.

The feeling in the room has changed so much in the last ninety minutes, the awkwardness replaced by a camaraderie that only invading one another’s bubbles can bring. Smiles light up faces that were apprehensive and there is a new confidence in the room. We can do this.

And faster.

One two three and four! Five six seven and eight! One two three and four! Five six seven and eight! One two three and four! Five six seven and eight!

Feet tap the floor, almost perfectly in time. Our hops from foot to foot are getting more graceful. We look smart, to be sure and our instructors look pleased.

We finish the first lesson, excited for the coming week. Six weeks from now we’ll know a whole new dance, and know it well enough that we look and feel fantastic doing it. For now though, it’s baby steps, eight at a time.
